With tiny hands, a child covers the playful smile on his face, a trick that seems foolproof to any little one who walks through life with diapers and all. His parents also see this clever game also known as “peek-a-boo” as something that is all too charming, and they play along with him every morning.
The family leaves home and heads toward “Doorway to Learning”, a childcare center located at a tranquil site on 1070 Emerson Dr NE, Palm Bay, FL. Once his parents leave him in class, they cover their faces, and at the count of three they’re no longer there. In their place is Luisa Arndt, his teacher, and lots of other boys and girls his age who he can play with. Together, they learn songs and the names of colors, practice to eat on their own and wash their hands in the bathroom. They read story books while chiming in and learn motor, language, and social skills, developing their intellect and gaining independence.
This child, along with his classmates comprise the total enrollment figure of 105 students ranging from 6 weeks to 12 years old at Doorway to Learning, a nationally accredited school. As a result they are not only watched over while their parents work, but are taught within colorful classrooms filled with toys and sleeping mats waiting for nap time.
Parents send their children to Doorway to Learning confidently trusting in the care the center’s personnel will show and give to meet the children’s needs. Each instructor is dedicated to providing the right amount of attention and encouragement the children need to master social skills, self-esteem and confidence at an early age. “These qualities will be essential in the future, of great value to pre-school age children who are preparing themselves for the challenge of higher education,” says Luisa Arndt, proficient in sign language and assistant to the center’s director, Cindy McGill.
At Doorway to Learning no child is turned down, no matter how much of a rascal he may be. That’s because at the core of the center’s values is to “never turn a parent down,” Luisa affirms between giggles as she remembers cases where they have opened the doors to children who had been expelled from at least three other childcare centers throughout the city.
“There are parents who desperately turn to Doorway to Learning because they have to work and have no one to care for their children. We never tell them we can’t help,” Luisa confirms. All are equal here, no child is discriminated because of his social class or race. Though they may be stigmatized elsewhere due to a physical or mental disability, for their skin color, or for not having parents, at Doorway to Learning each team member has an open heart to give an receive love from these little ones. Multiculturalism is one of the principal flagships of the center.
Doorway to Learning was opened in 1995. Its founder and president, Cindy McGill envisioned the center to be an innovative and educational environment for children. “We use a curriculum that focuses on alphabetization and learning. Our teachers are multilingual and highly qualified, they encourage learning through fun activities,” she states.
In addition, certification of personnel and continuing education, child care, and first aid training have earned the center the Florida Gold Seal of Excellence for the quality of service it offers, gaining the reputation of an enriching place for children.
To Luisa, a Peruvian who realized later in life she wished to care for and educate children, one of the most fulfilling experiences was to see the little ones she once cared for throughout her 15 year career at the center, but with the difference being they were now adults coming to the center to bring children of their own. “ A very beautiful bond is formed with each child, unforgettable despite the passing of the years. When they grow up they return to the center but with their own children”.

Doorway To Learning: un camino seguro para aprender

Con sus diminutas manos, se tapa su cara de niño listo, una táctica que parece infalible para cual-quier pequeñín que aún anda por la vida con pañal incorporado. Sus padres también saben de ese juego tan entretenido de apare-cer y desaparecer como si se tratará de algo mágico, y lo ponen en práctica cada mañana.
Salen de casa rumbo a la guardería, que se llama “Doorway to Learning” y está en una calle tranquila de 1070 Emerson Dr NE, Palm Bay, FL 32907. Lo dejan en su clase. Se cubren el rostro. Y a la cuenta de tres, ya no están. No pasa nada porque en su lugar se han materializado Lui-sa Arndt, su educadora, y otros niños y niñas de su edad, con los que empieza a relacionarse. Juntos apren-
den canciones y colores, a comer solos y a lavarse las manos en el cuarto de baño. Leen cuentos, parti-
cipan, desarrollan la motricidad, el lenguaje, las habilidades sociales, el intelecto y ganan en autonomía.
Este niño al igual que sus compañeros que van desde las 6 semanas a los 12 años de edad, integran la masa de algo más de 105 alumnos matriculados en una escuela nacional acreditada, como Doorway To Learning. Lo que significa que, además de recibir atención y cuidados mientras sus progenitores trabajan fuera de casa, se forman, entre habitaciones coloridas llenas de ju-guetes y colchonetas para echar la siesta.
Los padres que llevan a sus hijos a Doorway To Learning, confían en los cuidados meticulosos del personal de este centro para atender a las necesidades de los niños en desarrollo. Y es que, cada instructor está dedicado a proporcionar la combinación adecuada de la atención y la estimulación que los niños necesitan para dominar las habilidades sociales, la autoestima y la confianza en una edad temprana. “Estas cua-
lidades esenciales serán en un futuro, de gran valor para los niños preescolares, ya que se enfrentan al reto de la educación superior”, comenta Luisa Arndt, quién además de ser maestra capacitada en el lenguaje de señas, es asistente de la directora de la guardería, Cindy McGill.
En Doorway To Lear-ning, ningún pequeño por más travieso que sea, es rechazado. Y es que una de las premisas de este centro es: “nunca decirle al padre que no podemos cuidar de su hijo”, afirma entre risas Luisa, mientras re-cuerda casos de pequeños a los que se les han abierto las puertas de este centro, luego de que han sido expulsados de al menos tres guarderías distintas de la ciudad.
“Los padres recurren desesperados a Doorway To Learning, porque tienen que trabajar y no tienen quien le cuide a sus hijos. Nunca les decimos que no podemos atenderlos”, relata Luisa.
Aquí todos son iguales, no hay niños discriminados por su clase social o raza. A pesar de que sean estigmatizados en otros lugares por tener discapacidad física o mental, por su color, o por no tener padres, en Doorway To Learning, cada miembro de su personal, abre su corazón para entregar y recibir amor de estos pequeños. La multiculturalidad es una de las principales banderas de este centro.
Doorway To Learning, fue inaugurado en 1995. Su fundadora y presidenta, Cindy McGill, concibió esta guardería como un entorno educativo innovador para los niños. “Utilizamos un plan de estudios que se centra en la alfabetización y el aprendizaje. Nuestros profesores de crianza son multilingües, altamente cualificado y estimulan el aprendizaje a través de la diversión”, recalca.
